Join us for the 2021 holiday gift edition of Let’s Go Shopping!

Following me on social media yields a couple of obvious facts: First, I am a relentless marketer. Second, I relentlessly promote my various projects. Lately, one of those projects has been to organize a shopping event connecting small businesses with the customers who need them. The event is called Let’s Go Shopping, and it’s an all-day, two-day, online, accessible, virtual mall crawl like no other. Wow, that’s a lot of hyperbole.

Still, if you’ve attended one of these events before (this will be number six), you know that there are quite a few moving parts, and like the crazy person I am, I do most of the heavy lifting. If that sounds like a complaint, it isn’t. I’m so proud that I have supported over 35 small business entrepreneurs to this point, many of whom have disabilities. While I would not claim that these small business owners have made millions by participating in Let’s Go Shopping, I can say that they have received exposure they may not have otherwise, and I’d like to think I’ve contributed in a small way to their bottom line. Further, I’d like to think I’ve supported the customers who discovered them as well.

For lots of reasons, including the pandemic and associated restrictions, customers may not feel comfortable venturing out to shop. Maybe they are not yet vaccinated, or cannot be. Maybe they just don’t want to deal with the long lines and pressing crowds. Whatever the reason, staying home to shop via the Let’s Go Shopping virtual mall from the comfort of your couch is pretty fun. Plus, no mask required!

The Let’s Go Shopping holiday gift event begins Friday, November 5th, from 9AM to 5PM Pacific time, noon to 8PM Eastern. It continues Saturday, November 6th, again from 9AM PT, lasting all day. Want to join us? Here’s how:

Send a blank email to lgs+subscribe@groups.io and you will be added to the invite list. That’s where the first of a series of messages, including the complete schedule, vendor directory, door prize details, and Zoom login information will come from. In other words, everything you’ll want to know about Let’s Go Shopping comes from our groups list. Please subscribe!

If you’re not inclined to subscribe, I may post all the details here on the Sparkle On blog, if I have the time early Friday morning. Keep your eyes peeled for a post with all the last-minute details.

The Let’s Go Shopping events are an enormous undertaking, and I hope you enjoy the many wonderful products presented over the two days. Shop for food, fashion, gadgets, daily living aids, jewelry, coffee, supplies for pets and pet lovers, home fragrance, and much more. You can get your gift list completed in just one weekend, and support entrepreneurs with disabilities too. Ready for a little retail therapy? Let’s Go Shopping!

The early bird gets the jewelry! Here’s 2 ways to get a head start on your holiday shopping

At about this same time last year, I posted an article about the various ways in which the pandemic was likely to impact the holiday shopping season. A year ago, the messaging was all about parcel delivery services and the US mail, price increases and shipping delays. Many areas were still in lockdown, so online holiday shopping was the best option, which added to the overwhelming number of packages moving through the system. This year, the circumstances may be different, but the result is the same.

If you’ve been paying attention to the news, you may have heard that the 2021 holiday shopping season may be a bumpy one. Between low employment, Covid-19 variant concerns, semiconductor chip shortages, a traffic jam of container ships off both coasts loaded with holiday merchandise which is unlikely to find its way to store shelves in time for the holidays, a lack of truckers to get product from one place to another, and a host of other logistics disruptions and delays, getting those holiday gifts checked off your list may be more expensive and even more challenging this year. I’m already hearing major retailers urging customers to shop now now now, as they will not be able to restock before the end of the year. Still others are already implementing quantity restrictions on some of the same items as were limited last year.

With all of this in mind, I’m taking matters into my own hands for my customers. I’m hosting two events which will enable you to get your holiday shopping started early, so you can sit back and relax, with the peace of mind that you will not be waiting for products that may not be available six weeks from now.

The first is the Elegant Insights early bird shopping day, which is Friday, October 1st. I’m hosting two short Zoom sessions, where you can hear all about this year’s newest products, special holiday gift items, including the 2021 holiday ornament, as well as our Sparkle Squad subscription program. Choose from 9AM Pacific time, noon Eastern, or 3PM Pacific time, 6PM Eastern. Below are the Zoom login details for each:

Session 1
Topic: Elegant Insights Early Bird Holiday Shopping

Session 2
Topic: Elegant Insights Early Bird Holiday Shopping
Time: Oct 1, 2021 03:00 PM Pacific Time (US and Canada)/6 PM Eastern time.

Meeting ID: 714 2289 8429
Passcode: 0HHujV

The first week of November will bring the next Let’s Go Shopping virtual mall crawl. I’m already signing up new vendors, along with your old favorites, for a multi-day shopping extravaganza that promises to be fun and exciting. If you want to be sure you don’t miss any announcements about the Let’s Go Shopping 2021 Holiday Gift Extravaganza, send a blank email to:

lgs+subscribe@groups.io

and I’ll add you to the announce list!

I know it’s really early to think about holiday gifts, but I can assure you that if you get a head start, you’ll be able to sit back and relax and let others worry about long lines, wait lists, and a disappointing lack of choices. Enjoy these virtual shopping events, and remember, the early bird gets the jewelry!

The Sparkle Squad subscription boxes for September are pretty in pink.

Our second Sparkle Squad subscription boxes have shipped, and if you’ve opened yours, here is your quarterly post describing the contents. Everyone received a piece of jewelry, but there’s a non-jewelry item in the box that I’m sure has left you mystified. It amused me to imagine your reaction as you tried to guess at its purpose. Read on!

The theme this time around is “pretty in pink,” since all of the packaging, as well as the contents, is a variation of pink or rose. The tissue paper is a metallic pink with a polka-dot pattern on it, which is Cheree’s favorite. For those of you who don’t know, Cheree is one of the artists who has worked with me over the years, making jewelry, and now, has helped me to come up with some great Sparkle Squad box packaging. In addition to the metallic tissue, Cheree made the little boxes that contains one of the items you received. The box is a gleaming rose gold foil, and Cheree used a special tool to imprint either Essential Elegance or Sparkle Dots on the boxes, then she added a “thank you” sticker. The jewelry is tucked into our usual purple satin drawstring pouch.

Mixed composition photo of Sparkle Squad packaging, showing pink metallic tissue paper with polka-dot pattern, a rose gold foil box that says Essential Elegance, a purple satin pouch and an Elegant Insights business card.

I’ll begin with the items that everyone received in their box, the mystery item that, if you did not immediately know what it was, you might think it was a plastic sandwich bag. No, it’s not meant for your lunch. Pull all of them out of the box, and you’ll notice there are actually two different sizes of these plastic sleeves. They are cell phone and tablet protectors.

My thinking was that with the onset of fall weather, you might find yourself out in the elements with your phone or tablet. Maybe you have to wait at a bus stop, call for a ride share vehicle, or find yourself locked out, and in the rain or snow. Or, maybe you work in an office setting with cold and flu working its way through the people in your department, or the person sharing your cubicle or desk is a germ factory. Or, maybe you find yourself surrounded by little ones with sticky fingers who want to play with your tablet. Or, maybe you just got a brand new gadget, and while you are awaiting the arrival of the new case and screen protector you ordered, you need something to protect your device.

Just slide your phone or tablet into the sleeve, fold over the top with the adhesive, and you can keep your gadget safe from the elements, dirt, fingerprints, and who knows what else. You will be able to use the touch screen while the sleeve protects your expensive tech. They are reusable, although you received 5 of each size, so keep one in your purse, desk, or kitchen drawer for those situations where you need to use the device with messy hands. You can even tuck one of them into a pocket on your phone case, if you have an expensive leather case you don’t want ruined by the rain, or you can use them to protect whatever fits in it — chargers, cords, whatever. You never know when one of these clever sleeves will come in handy.

Now, on to the jewelry!

The Essential Elegance Box

The Essential Elegance Box includes a beautiful gem station convertible necklace. It’s about 24 inches long, and the rolo link chain and toggle clasp are a gleaming stainless steel. The bead stations consist of 3 beads, a large, natural nugget-shaped rose quartz bead that is flanked by blush pink genuine freshwater pearls. Each station is separated by about 2 inches of chain.

The reason the necklace is called “convertible is that you can wear it two ways. If you wear the toggle clasp in back, the necklace is a simple and classic look. If you wear it with the toggle clasp in front, you can add a pendant to it, using an enhancer bail that clips over the ring of the toggle clasp, changing the necklace into a more casual style. We’ll have several pendants from which to choose on the Elegant Insights web site. One is an exact match to the necklace, which you can use with other chains you may already have. It features a large nugget rose quartz bead, and a little dangle grouping of the pink pearls that exactly match the necklace. Another interchangeable pendant will be a cross pendant, again, using the same pretty pink pearls from your necklace, and 8mm round rose quartz beads. We can even engrave the cross with a special message, or add a few braille characters of your choice.

The Sparkle Dots Box

The Sparkle Dots Box includes leverback dangle earrings that are an exact match to the necklace described above. They feature a stainless steel leverback finding, with a pretty little dangle of rose quartz and blush pink pearls. The overall length is about 1 and 1/2 inches. The Sparkle Dots box also contained the set of 10 gadget sleeves mentioned above.

Photo of the rose quartz and pink pearl necklace arranged in a circle on a purple background, with matching earrings in the center of the circle.

If you want to augment your jewelry with additional items, they will be available on the Elegant Insights web site soon. If you have the earrings, the dangle drop pendant would be super cute clipped to a bracelet or neck chain you already have. If you received the necklace, the earrings are an exact match, and would be a knockout set. If you want more of the phone or gadget sleeves, I won’t be putting them up on the web site for sale, but let me know if you want more, and I’ll send you another set of 10 for just the cost of shipping.

We’re already working on the designs for the next Sparkle Squad boxes, which will ship December 10. We’ll also have a holiday gift bonus box that you can purchase for friends or family, which will include jewelry and accessories items you can keep for yourself or give away as separate gifts. We hope you love the items in your pretty pink Sparkle Squad box, and as always, don’t hesitate to drop us a note if you have any subscription box or jewelry design ideas.

Did you miss the deadline for the September Sparkle Squad subscription? We’ve got you, don’t worry. If you want to become a Sparkle Squad subscriber, start here! Or, we will have a one-time-only box available for you, if you just want to check out the boxes, and decide whether or not a subscription is for you. Look for the one-time-only box in a few weeks.

Sparkle on!

Details that make a difference: Bead caps.

Sometimes, it’s the little things that count, and when it comes to jewelry, it’s the really little things. So little, in fact, that you may have never noticed a tiny detail that can mean the difference between fine workmanship and a basic. If you don’t know a great deal about how jewelry is made, or if you don’t have much of an eye for design, or if you count yourself amongst the jewelry clueless, allow me to call your attention to a minuscule component called a bead cap.

We all want to know we have chosen wisely when making an expensive purchase such as jewelry. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to know if we are getting our moneys worth. There are a few telltale signs, however, that reveal the designer or craftsperson put a bit of extra thought into the creation of their product, even if it’s in a detail that you may not have otherwise noticed.

When examining a piece of jewelry to determine value, whether buying for yourself, as a gift, or just browsing, there are a few factors that are a dead giveaway with respect to answering the craftsmanship question. One factor is the weight. For example, if you were to hold a visually identical designer watch in each hand, one that is crafted in gold and the other only plated with gold, the heavier timepiece is almost certain to be the genuine one. In the case of quality natural versus imitation diamonds, the dead giveaway that can determine a quality cut is the scintillation. In this article by the American Gem Society, scintillation is described as the flashes of both white and color sparkle thrown out by the movement of light, whether the diamond, the person, or the light source is moving. Often, a poorly cut or imitation gem does not possess observable flash or fiery scintillation. Finally, adding extra touches, such as attaching a unique clasp, a safety chain, or using decorative bead caps, can suggest quality, thoughtful design.

What is a bead cap? Think of a baseball cap without the bill, or visor, that sticks out in front. A bead cap is simply a half round, or domed, cap with a tiny hole at its center top that sits between the end of a round bead or gem and the pin or wire connecting the embellishments together, whether on a necklace, earring dangle, or pendant drop. Bead caps come in all shapes and sizes, finishes and textures. They can be cutout, corrugated, flower or star-shaped. They are found in all kinds of metals, covered with tiny gems, diamond cut to sparkle, or shiny and smooth.

Photo of three bead caps, from left to right, brass fluted bead cap, aluminum flower, and a corrugated copper bead cap.

A bead cap is simply an enhancement. In the same way you might use fancy, decorative bookends for the leather-bound books on a shelf, or colorful sprinkles on a cupcake, or the perfect handbag, scarf, or belt to set off an outfit, bead caps are a tiny little touch that can make a big difference in the perceived quality of a piece of jewelry.

Bead caps can also serve a more practical purpose, in that when using a bead or pearl with a larger hole, a bead cap can be used as a stopper of sorts, to stabilize the bead, so that it is securely held in place and doesn’t slide along the wire or off the pin end.

Photo of a blue pearl with attached bead cap, wire wrapped with an end loop. Top view photo of blue pearl with aluminum bead cap, attached with wire.

There are so many tiny parts and pieces used in the creation of jewelry that sometimes, these little details go unnoticed. Now that you can identify one of them, you can compare items as you shop, and feel a bit more confident that you are making a purchase with that little bit of extra something…A detail that makes a difference.

The Sparkle Squad makes a splash with the debut subscription boxes! Get the details here!

The debut boxes for the Sparkle Squad subscription have shipped, and if you are among the recipients, here is the first post describing the contents. Each quarter, on the 15th of the ship month, you can return here to get the rundown, as well as links to coordinating items to round out your collection.

If you are not a Sparkle Squad subscriber, stay tuned for more info on how to jump in. Subscribers get discounts and product exclusives, so the items described in this post may not yet be available on Elegant Insights, and when they do become available, the retail price may be higher than the cost of the box. So, if you want all the juicy benefits, join the Sparkle Squad today!

Photo of Sparkle Squad debut box packaging, with teal circles on purple tissue. Top says Essential Elegance, bottom says Sparkle Dots.

The Sparkle Squad subscription consists of a choice of two boxes. The Sparkle Dots box includes jewelry and/or accessories inspired by the Elegant Insights product line. Many, but not all, of the items will be braille-embossed. The Essential Elegance box consists of jewelry and/or accessories that are easy-on, easy-off styles, with frustration-free clasps or slip-on options, perfect for anyone who wants to keep their jewelry collection simple and elegant. Below are descriptions of the contents of each box.

The Sparkle Dots Box:

The Tropical Seascape Purse Charm – For summer 2021, we plan to launch a new collection inspired by a beach vacation getaway. The Tropical Seascape purse charm features a silver tone clasp for attaching to the hardware of your handbag, and a jingly-jangly cascade of sea creatures and crustaceans. Along the length of a stainless steel chain you’ll find a sweet little seahorse, a crab, a tropical fish, and a sea star. We’ve embellished the chain with vivid, sparkling turquoise crystals the color of an island lagoon, diamond-cut round beads, turquoise genuine mother of pearl coin-shaped shell beads that look like bubbles rising to the surface, tiny starfish and scallop shell charms in silvery steel, and at the bottom, a large clownfish shaped charm, braille-embossed with the word, “serenity.”

Scentsy Sachet – These fantastically fragrant sachets come from Scentsy with Nini, and each fragrance evokes the scent of summer. Everyone received a randomly selected fragrance, so if you love yours and want more just like it, go here to order, or reach out via the sticker on the packaging. You can also call Nini at 916-206-1151. Fill your life with fragrance with Scentsy by Nini.

The Essential Elegance Box:

Photo of the Tropical Seascape Purse Charm.

Going forward, the plan for this box will become more of a departure from the Sparkle Dots box, for our first shipment, however, we wanted to keep things simple so we could ensure a smooth debut, and fewer complications. So, in addition to the items described above, the Tropical Seascape Purse Charm and the Scentsy sachet by Nini, subscribers of this box also received the brand new Sand and Sea Expandable Dangle Bangle Bracelet.

The Sand & Sea Bangle – This fashionable wristwear features a slender wire bracelet, embellished with genuine freshwater pearls in seashell shades, such as sand, peach, and blush pink. A tiny starfish and textured clamshell charm is set off by a scallop shell, braille-embossed with “sand and sea,” in grade 2 braille. This fun accessory just says summer.

A subscription for all seasons, and ten reasons to celebrate!

As milestones go, this one is a big one for me. It’s the ten year anniversary of Elegant Insights. Launched in spring of 2011, Elegant Insights has offered beautiful handcrafted original jewelry and accessories embossed in braille. It certainly hasn’t been easy, but talk to any entrepreneur and they are likely to confess that the business road is a bumpy one, with a seemingly endless gauntlet of challenging obstacles to overcome. The pandemic has required many of us to change the way we live and work, and for business owners, that has meant changing the way products and services are delivered. Elegant Insights has been no different.

In an effort to add new and exciting designs, along with fun new ways to shop for them, I’ve decided one way to pivot to the new paradigm is to jump on the subscription box bandwagon. By now, everyone has heard of, if not subscribed to, Stitch Fix, Ipsy, Dollar Shave Club, Birch Box, or insert snack or coffee of the month club subscription here. It’s a great business model, fun for both the customer and the business owner, and I thought it might be an interesting way to introduce our products to a whole new market. So, I’ve created the Sparkle Squad, an open membership of current customers or new fans, who can subscribe to a choice of two subscription boxes, each with a different emphasis.

The first choice is a well-priced box I created for my existing customers, or anyone who loves the idea of jewelry embossed in braille. It’s called the Sparkle Dots box. Many of the items I plan to include will be inspired by our existing inventory. In the case of the very first box, subscribers will receive an item that will be exclusive to the subscription, and may not be incorporated into our product line until later in the summer. However, coordinating items will be available right away. So, if you love the item in the first box, you’ll love the other items in the vignette. Subscribers can come back here to the Sparkle On blog to get a complete description of the items in their box. At just $25 plus shipping, the Sparkle Dots Box is a perfect pick-me-up for fans of our braille jewelry and accessories.

The second subscription is designed to be a bit more generic in that the theme is inclusivity, but not necessarily intended for a braille-reading consumer. Rather, this box is ideal for anyone who wants to keep things simple yet stylish. The Essential Elegance Box will consist of jewelry and accessories that are easy-on, easy-off, with frustration-free clasps and jewelry that can be worn multiple ways. Again, coordinating pieces will be available on the Elegant Insights web site, and subscribers can return here to the Sparkle On Blog to get the rundown on the contents of their box. The Essential Elegance Box will be $50.

Mixed composition photo representative of the Essential Elegance subscription. A large white jewelry box rests on purple tissue paper, with a teal drawstring jewelry pouch lying on top. A strand of pearls, a wire bracelet, and loose crystals are scattered on the foreground. At top is an Elegant Insights business card next to a heart pendant necklace braille embossed with E I.

In both cases, the boxes will ship on a fixed, quarterly, ship date that will remain the same every year. Each season, on the 10th or so of each ship month – June, September, December, and March – subscribers will receive a new box. In addition to jewelry, we plan to include all sorts of fun accessories, some of which may be jewelry-related, such as a cleaning kit, or it may be they gadget or purse accessory. I hope to also offer “one-off,” or bonus boxes for special holiday items or gift-giving. No matter which box you choose, you can fill out a short questionnaire that will enable us to tailor your subscription to your preferences.

The Sparkle Squad subscription project has been a huge undertaking, and far more complex than I had thought it would be at first. I’m still tinkering on the web site, trying to nail down the workflow and ensure proper notifications and order processing. Unfortunately, I won’t know how well the system works until the orders begin, but sometimes you just have to go all in and squash those bugs in real time.

Update: The Sparkle Squad subscription is now live! To get the scoop, and fill out the style survey, start here:

elegantinsightsjewelry.com/sparkle-squad/.

Our tenth anniversary year has been a blast so far. While it remains to be seen if this new endeavor will fly, I’m looking forward to the next ten years of serving my community and offering our distinctive, handcrafted collection of jewelry and accessories with a tactile twist!

Sparkle on!

Let’s Go Shopping for New Things for Spring!

If you’re like a lot of people these days, then you simply cannot wait until you are fully inoculated from Covid-19 so that you can get back to work or school, reunite with friends and family, drink, dine, and shop ’til you drop. *Raises hand*.

Still, lots of us have yet to receive both doses of whichever vaccine we’ll get, or maybe for any number of reasons you won’t be getting vaccinated at all. That may put a damper on big plans to get out and get back to normal in time for shopping for Mother’s Day, birthday,
Father’s Day, or graduation gifts. So, I’ve decided to host another Let’s Go Shopping virtual mall crawl. I’ve written about these events previously, as this will be the fifth, and this time the theme is “new things for spring.” Discover vendors offering food, fashion, home decor, fragrance, technology, beauty, pet care, subscription boxes, bags and accessories, and gifts just in time for all the spring and summer socially distant get-togethers. Now that’s a contradiction in terms, if ever there was one. Of course, Elegant Insights will have a few new things for spring as well, so be sure to tune in throughout the day, as I will be on twice.

If you are new to the Sparkle On blog, and have no idea to what I’m referring, you can read about what inspired the first Let’s Go Shopping event here..

For those of you who do plan to attend, virtually, of course, below you’ll find the schedule for the day, the vendor directory, and the all-important Zoom virtual shopping mall invitation.

Ready for a little retail therapy? Let’s go shopping!
